Other Notes: Shandiz Restaurant is the real deal. This is not a place for expats. This place is for, and caters to local Afghanis. Its food is a mix between Afghani and Iranian. A very good place to eat, with one exception, no security.

That’s right; there is absolutely no security to this place. Anyone can walk in off the street and walk right in. This isn’t a problem as the restaurant is mostly locals, but if security is your thing, the Shandiz isn’t for you.

Of course, like most places in Afghanistan, you can order one or two items before you find something they have that night. But the food at the Shandiz Restaurant is very good and worth the deal making.

Simplicity is the motto here. The food is served right on the big swords that they are cooked on. The food is good and cheap.

One thing to note about the food, they also have “peppers” on the swords. These aren’t the typical green peppers we have in the US, even thought they look like them at a quick glace. In fact, these are some serious hot peppers! Beware.

The décor is authentic and very friendly and warm. The smell of molasses hookah filled the air as we walked in, yet it wasn’t smoky due to the high ceilings.

Bottom line, if you want to eat authentic food in an authentic setting and security isn’t a concern, try the Shandiz Restaurant.
