Other Notes: Sushi, in Afghanistan? I know, I was skeptical at first as well. Note I’m a Sushi hound! I could eat it three meals a day. I can out eat anyone in sushi. That is just some background for you.

Now, The Bentoya Restaurant isn’t easy to find. It’s in the Galleria, near the Dutch Embassy. If you get that close, call for directions. Its one turn, then a little set of orange gates separates you from this neat little find in Kabul. Security is only moderately good. They need to add a sally port and full time guard and they can be put on most security firm’s “approved” list.

Before you get to the restaurant, which is a tiny little place, you will pass through some really neat bric-a-brac stores. The entire place is one neat cubby hole after another. Once you find the Bentoya Restaurant, you’ll see it’s an open window for the take out crowd. But, if you time it right and/or call ahead, you can get one of these great tables set in a very quiet room to enjoy the food.

As for the food, it was yummy. The meal I ordered had the Maki sushi, which, while a good roll, and it was prepared excellently, does not contain any fish. In fact, none of their sushi contains fish. It’s impossible to get fresh fish of that caliber here in country. But the plate did come with chopsticks. I wasn’t expecting that.

The owner is a great, delightful lady. Very friendly, and helpful (as I can attest to after my multiple phone calls for directions.) One thing that is lacking, but totally understandable, Sake. It’s a shame because it would have rounded the meal perfectly!
